It's not very often that a book is written on the topic of hockey card's. This book is very unique as it goes through the author's childhood card's. For one reason or another, he has picked out card's that caught his attention growing up and tracked down the player to ask about the card. Due to the Author's (Ken Reid) position at Sportsnet this made the process a little more simple compared to your average Joe.
The card's are interesting for various reasons, some are badly airbrushed, some player's only played a few NHL games and other's are in a unique pose on their cardboard. While the author discusses the card, he also gives insight to the player's thought's on the card. A lot of the reflection's from the player's are not what I would have expected. Some don't really consider having a card a big deal. Others had short careers and did not feel that their time in pro hockey was not a significant moment in their lives.
Player's featured in the book include former league stars such as Bobby Orr & Phil Esposito. However some of the stories feature lesser know player's including former WHA Goalie Joe Daley. Mr. Daley played for the Winnipeg Jets in the WHA and still lives in the city to this day operating a hockey card and framing store.
The book is quite entertaining and a fun read. It is a must read for anyone who grew up collecting hockey cards through the 70's & 80's.
